Bad politics provides a good reminder …

Regardless of your political preferences, most of us have been watching the recent exploits in our nation’s capitol with great disappointment. What politicians have been doing is more politics than resolving the serious problems our own government is causing. It’s been a poignant reminder that bad processes can only create poor results.

That’s important to remember considering we human beings tend to be habitual about whatever we do. We develop routine processes for exercising each aspect of our lives, then tend to put those processes on auto pilot, repeating them over and over again.

In general, there’s nothing wrong with developing a process for accomplishing something, or even with creating good habits. The problem comes when we develop a bad process that we habitualize, insisting on repeatedly trying to get a good result from it.

It can’t be done.

A bad process will always lead to an undesirable result:

  • In business, a bad process will not achieve efficiency, productivity, promotion, or profit.
  • Physically, a bad process for taking care of your body will result in physical deconditioning and, eventually, poor health.
  • Poor thought processes can result in emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Spiritually, a poor process of discipleship will, at best, result in spiritual immaturity and missing out on the fullness of God’s will for your life.

If you find yourself struggling with different aspects of your life, take an honest look at the processes you’ve built. If they are not achieving good results, then it’s time to change the process!

First Corinthians 14:33a says, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace …” In other words, God has an orderly process for how He does things, which is a good example for us to follow.
