Don’t be afraid of the shore …

In the book, “Tuesdays With Morrie” by Mitch Albom, a story is told about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He’s enjoying the wind and the fresh air until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.

“This is terrible!” the little wave says. “Look what’s going to happen to me!”

Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, “Why do you look so sad?”

The first wave answers, “You don’t understand! We’re all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?”

The second wave says, “No, you don’t understand. You’re not just a wave, you’re part of the ocean!”

Great story! The little wave could only see himself wiping out at the beach, rather than the greater truth of being a part of something much bigger than a splash on the shore.

I think many Christians think of their lives more like that little wave did. They seem to have their lives fixed on their personal outcomes and are concerned with not depleting themselves, almost oblivious to the fact they are part of something much greater than their little selves …

“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into
his wonderful light,”
1 Peter 2:9.

Instead of worrying about spending yourself on the shores of God’s kingdom, remember you’re a part of something far greater than yourself.
