Dr. Seuss knows who you are …
There’s a lot of platitudes about not trying to be like others, and some claim the influences in your life determine who you become.
In the big picture of your existence, none of those claims are true.
You can’t become anyone other than who you are, no matter how hard you may try or who you allow to influence you.
God made only one of you, and He gave you control of your mind and body. At any given time throughout your lifetime, you can only be you.
It’s true you can mimic others, and you can be influenced by others. Even then, you will always be you even if you choose to act like others or yield to their proddings.
Even the iconic figure Dr. Seuss understood this, reflecting on it with this statement: “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”
But there’s one problem: you and I broke ourselves! We’ve done irrepairable harm to the person God made you and me to be. Fortunately, the one person who could possibly fix the damage we’ve done to ourselves — God — has stepped in with a perfect solution.
That solution is a new you, and a new me, fashioned to be like Jesus so we don’t keep on causing the same damage we’ve already caused. The Apostle Paul explains God’s fix for our need this way:
“Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God — truly righteous and holy,” Ephesians 4:21-24.
Through Christ, you can be a you that you’ll always want to be!
