COMMUNION MEDITATION: Don’t forget to remember …

Someone asked Martin Luther why he would preach the Gospel over and over again. Luther replied, “Because they forget it everyday.”

It’s hard to believe we actually forget the Gospel, but ask yourself this: When was the last time YOU remembered — brought to mind — the sacrifice Jesus made of Himself on the cross?

Was it yesterday?

The day before?

The day before that?

In your own life, how many days can pass without any remembrance of Jesus offering His blood and body for your salvation?

We’re not just capable of forgetting the most significant event in all of history, we have a habit of doing so. For that reason, Jesus introduced a practice for His disciples, designed specifically to help them remember what He has done to save us all …

“For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and his people — an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it,” 1 Corinthians 11:23-25.

Don’t forget to remember!
