3 reasons why you can trust God …
Back in 1991, George Barna made some claims in “The Barna Report: What Americans Believe,” including the following:
“While an estimated 74 percent of Americans strongly agree that ‘there is only one true God, who is holy and perfect, and who created the world and rules it today,’ an estimated 65 percent either strongly agree or somewhat agree with the assertion that ‘there is no such thing as absolute truth.'”
If you believe there is a God, but can’t trust Him, He wouldn’t be much of a God, would He?
Let me give you three simple reasons we have to trust God. We can trust God …
… because of who He is (His character).
… because of what He has said (His promises).
… and because of what He has done (His track record).
WHO HE IS
Most people who say they don’t trust God do so because they either don’t really know Him, or have lost sight of who He is. When we clearly understand His character — who He is — it would be hard not to trust Him!
Sadly, just learning about the character of God is a vastly overlooked part of the discipleship process for most Christians, but it is deeply impactful on our relationship with God. Exploring the character of God is necessary to understand Him. For example, knowing that God IS love, that He is holy, just, righteous, good, omnipotent, omniscient, and so on reveals to us who God is, and when we see Him for who He is, we can trust in a God of that character.
WHAT HE HAS SAID
There are many promises made by God that are recorded in the Bible. But when God says something, it’s very different than when a human being speaks. God created everything that exists by speaking it into being; when He speaks, there is no possibility that He won’t keep His promises, rather, His promises are the proclamation of what is sure to come …
“God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Numbers 23:29.
“So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us,” Hebrews 6:18.
WHAT HE HAS DONE
It’s one thing to make a promise, another thing to keep it. God has kept all of His! from the conversations with the first human beings in the Garden of Eden, through all of human history, God’s track record for doing what He has said He will do is perfect.
That includes in your life as well.
If your trust in God has been a little wobbly lately, let me encourage you to delve deeply into the Bible to further explore who He is, what He has said, and what His track record is. Doing so will bolster your trust in the one we can place our trust in without wavering.
“Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise,” Hebrews 10:23.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding,” Proverbs 3:5.
