Have you turned your social media accounts into the Fight Club?

It used to be said that some people make no effort to get along with others. Today, it’s not uncommon for people to convert their various social media platforms into a version of their own “Fight Club” by constantly finding something to quarrel about and someone to quarrel with.

That reminds me of a story about a lady who was interviewing a prospective household cook …

“Why did you leave your last position as a cook?” the woman asked the applicant.

“To tell the truth, ma’am, I just couldn’t stand the way the man and the woman used to quarrel,” explained the cook.

“Dear me! Do you mean to say they actually used to quarrel?” the lady asked.

“Yes, ma’am, all the time. When it wasn’t me and him, it was me and her!”

Some people are always in the midst of a quarrel – if not started by them, then fueled by them. That, according to the Apostle Paul, is no way for a Christian to behave.

In 2 Timothy 2, Paul begins by giving Timothy insight on how to be a “good soldier of Christ Jesus.” Three times he would broach the subject of quarreling:

“Remind everyone about these things, and command them in God’s presence to stop fighting over words. Such arguments are useless, and they can ruin those who hear them,” 2 Timothy 2:14.

“Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior. This kind of talk spreads like cancer, as in the case of Hymenaeus and Philetus,” 2 Timothy 2:16-17.

“Again I say, don’t get involved in foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights. A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people,” 2 Timothy 2:23-24.

Sadly, some would argue they have just causes for their quarrels!

I’m not saying there isn’t a time to, in a civil manner, discuss differing views and positions, etc. But more often the case is what Paul described: “… foolish, ignorant arguments that only start fights.”

That is not the behavior of a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

Is it yours?
