What delights you? Here are five things that should …

Like a moth drawn to a flame, human beings are drawn to what delights them.

We most highly value, and make time for, the things we find to be delightful. Perhaps that’s why the Bible helps Christians understand what are some of the things we are encouraged to take delight in. Here are just five that the Bible names:

1. The Lord. “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires,” Psalm 37:4. God, Himself, is an endless source of delight, as there is nothing in Him or about Him which is not delightful!

2. Other people. Philippians 2:3 says, “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” It would be more than difficult to think “of others as better than yourselves” without finding something delightful about them. Search for it, it’s there, even if only that the other person has been created in the likeness of his or her Maker. You will likely find your own perspective about a person to change when you make the effort to find something that is delightful about them.

3. Your spouse. “Live happily with the woman you love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given you under the sun. The wife God gives you is your reward for all your earthly toil,” Ecclesiastes 9:9 and “Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth,” Proverbs 5:18.

4. Doing God’s will. “I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart,” Psalm 40:8. We should find delightful that, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him,” Philippians 2:13.

5. God’s standard. Psalm 119:16 states, “I will delight in your decrees and not forget your word.” Whether this, or King David writing of taking delight in the “law of the Lord,” we can find great delight in the holy Word of God.

These are some of the things the Bible says should delight us. What is it that you find delightful?
