A day that celebrates love is never a cheesy thing …

Men can be a little too practical sometimes when it comes to picking out gifts for the people they love.

Take, for example this story told by pastor Ed Vasicek:

Sam was chatting with his friend Ted. He asked Ted whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day.

“Yes,” Ted rapidly replied, “I bought her a belt and a bag.”

“That sounds good,” Sam responded. “I hope she will like them.”

Ted grinned, “Me too. I am hoping that the vacuum cleaner will work better now.”

Some people love Valentine’s Day because they love any excuse to shower their spouse or others with expressions of love and affection. Others gripe about having to hunt for gifts and make a little extra effort at giving a little more attention to others. Still others complain about the commercial nature of Valentine’s Day and some say such a holiday is just “cheesy.”

Well let me ask: What’s so cheesy about taking a day to re-focus on expressing your love to your spouse, or other significant people in your life?

“We can do that every day of the year!” some would answer.

True!

But we often don’t.

I personally don’t know of anyone — and have not heard of anyone — who has too much love expressed to them by someone else.

I do know many people who feel very unloved, or under-loved.

So maybe it’s not a bad idea (certainly not a cheesy one!) that we take a day for regaining our focus on the loves of our lives and making sure they know just how much they are loved. Whatever you do with Valentine’s Day, let me suggest you use it as a day to recalibrate yourself to lavishing love on others freely and without reservation not just today, but today and going forward.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
