If you could get away with something, what would it be?

Have you ever found yourself in a setting where someone was asked, “If you could do one thing you wanted, and get away with it, what would it be?”

The question is deeper, meaning if you could do one thing you wanted and not get in trouble with God for doing it, what would that kind of something be?

I’ve always found that question to be fascinating because when I’ve heard the question asked, it was usually asked of Christians, and almost always the answer was some kind of sin.

The thinking was, “Well hey, if I really could do anything, and God knew but I would get a pass from Him and not get in trouble, then hey, I would …”

Why is it that, for so many, if we had the chance at one thing and it wouldn’t get us into trouble with God, that one thing we desire would be something sinful?

Why not — if we could do one thing that we really desired, really yearned for, that deep down we really wanted — why wouldn’t that one thing be something of holiness?

Something righteous?

Something that would bring great glory to God?

Something that would contribute to the Kingdom of God?

Something that would benefit the church?

Why is it that for so many who profess to be Christian that if they had an opportunity for sin, they wouldn’t respond by being repulsed by such an offer?

It’s to that level that God wants to see us mature spiritually to, and something that the Apostle Paul zeros in on:

“So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world,” Colossians‬ ‭3:5‬.

If you could get a pass for a sin, would you take it? Or would your desire for holiness and to please God make such an offer repulsive to you?
