The Decider …

The mainstream media enjoyed — perhaps too much? — some of the interesting choice of words President George Bush used in his speeches and statements while he was President.

One that is sometimes still talked about was his identifying himself as the “decider” in comments about people wanting Donald Rumsfeld replaced as the Secretary of Defense. During his comments on March 31, 2016, Bush said:

“I have strong confidence in Don Rumsfeld. I hear the voices, and I read the front page, and I know the speculation. But I’m the decider, and I decide what is best, and what is best is for Don Rumsfeld to remain the the Secretary of Defense.”

President Bush was correct in that he was the person in the position, and with the authority, to decide whether Rumsfeld should remain in office or be asked to tender his resignation. In that regard, Bush was, indeed, the “decider.”

When it comes to our own lives, we like to think we’re the decider. We like to think we decide what is best. And the truth is that God gives us a lot of freedom to make decisions regarding our individual lives. In a lot of ways, we’re the decider.

But we aren’t the ultimate Decider.

Regardless of the decisions we make, we can’t make decisions that are free of consequences, and some consequences aren’t ours to fully decide.

That’s because Jesus reigns as King, as preeminent over all things (Col. 1:15-18), and He is the ultimate decider. In that position of preeminence, here is how King Jesus has structured what decision-making we make will impact our lives:

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash,” Matthew 7:4-27.

What serves as the foundation of what you decide in life matters, now and forever.
