The God-given strength we already have …

Many of us have heard someone say, “When it comes to ______, I just have no self-control.” Whether in the face of temptation, impulsive habits, or simply everyday challenges, it’s an excuse that can sound sympathetic, even reasonable. But the reality is often simpler — and far more empowering — than we let ourselves believe. The problem isn’t that we lack discipline; it’s that we aren’t using the self-discipline God has already provided.

In 2 Timothy 1:7, we’re informed, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Here, self-discipline isn’t something we’re waiting to develop; it’s already a part of our spiritual identity in Christ. This discipline isn’t just the strength to resist impulses in the moment, it’s the ongoing ability to choose what aligns with our values, to stay on course over time.

When we say, “I have no self-control,” we’re really attempting to let ourselves off the hook. We’re ignoring the truth that God has already instilled in us a spirit capable of disciplined, intentional living. Self-discipline is like a spiritual muscle, one that grows stronger as we use it. Each time we choose to walk in the discipline God provides, we strengthen our ability to make choices that reflect His power and love.

Imagine if we took God at His word and committed to the discipline He’s already given us. How might this reshape our choices, our relationships, our habits, and our faith?

In Christ, we’re not helpless. We’re not lacking. We have the gift of self-discipline, and our call is to live it out — not to make excuses, but to draw from the steady strength He’s placed within us.
